Therapies: Therapy Services Designed to Restore Strength, Function, and Confidence

Our comprehensive therapy program offers both in-house and outpatient services to support each resident’s rehabilitation journey. With access to skilled Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapists seven days a week—alongside dedicated respiratory support—patients receive personalized treatment plans tailored to their goals. This integrated approach helps individuals regain independence, improve mobility, and achieve meaningful progress in a supportive, compassionate environment.

Key Capabilities:

Therapy Coverage & Access

St. Joseph’s provides therapy services seven days per week, including Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), and Speech Therapy (ST). PTA and OTA coverage is available on Saturdays, with occasional PT coverage through per diem staff, and OT coverage on Sundays. Weekend and holiday therapy services are available as needed, with staff often working on holidays or the surrounding weekend. New therapy evaluations are typically completed within 24 hours, and in some cases, the same day.

Clinical Capabilities & Staff Expertise

Our therapy team holds advanced certifications and specialty training across a wide range of clinical areas, including LSVT BIG® and LOUD® (three LSVT-certified therapists), Speak Out, pulmonary rehabilitation training using OmniFlow®, neurological rehabilitation for conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis (Graceful Motion), vestibular rehabilitation, low vision rehabilitation, dementia-capable care training, fall prevention and STEADI-based programs, and manual therapy and pain management techniques. Wound care training is currently in progress for select Occupational Therapists. The majority of therapy staff hold advanced certifications, with LSVT being a primary specialty.

ACP & Specialized Therapy Equipment

St. Joseph’s utilizes advanced clinical pathway (ACP) and specialized therapy equipment to support a wide range of diagnoses. Available equipment includes e-stim, diathermy, OmniFlow®, OmniVR®, OmniCycle®, and NuStep®. These technologies support contracture management, strengthening and stroke recovery, pulmonary rehabilitation, deconditioning, cardiac recovery, orthopedic rehabilitation, and overall endurance. All therapists are trained in the use of this specialized equipment.

Specialized Clinical Programs Offered

The therapy department supports a variety of specialized clinical programs, including fall prevention and balance training, pulmonary rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, cardiac conditioning, low vision programs, pain management, and Graceful Motion mobility and aging-well programs (supported by two trained therapists). Wound care collaboration is also underway through ACP participation. These programs focus on improving endurance, strength, transfers, ambulation, and overall functional independence, with outcomes varying based on individual needs. Graceful Motion and LSVT-based exercises often show measurable improvement from the start of therapy through discharge.

Discharge Planning & Continuum of Care

Therapists actively assist with discharge planning by coordinating durable medical equipment needs such as hospital beds, mechanical lifts, commodes, rolling walkers, and wheelchairs. Home evaluations are offered when appropriate and when families are able to transport residents. Customized home exercise programs are provided prior to discharge when indicated. Therapists also educate residents and caregivers on safe mobility at home, often holding multiple family meetings and training sessions. The therapy team collaborates closely with nursing, case management, and families to ensure safe transitions, including car transfers, tub transfers, stair training, and catheter management education when needed.

Therapy Leadership

Director of Rehabilitation
The Director of Rehabilitation holds a master’s degree and is a licensed Occupational Therapist (OTR) with seven years of healthcare experience. While newer to formal leadership, the director has served as lead therapist at St. Joseph’s for over two years and brings experience in psychiatric care, early intervention, and LSVT certification.

Assistant Director of Rehabilitation
The Assistant Director holds an associate degree and is a licensed Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) with 16 years of healthcare experience. They have worked exclusively in skilled nursing settings and have been part of the St. Joseph’s team for approximately 13 years.

What Makes Our Therapy Department Unique

St. Joseph’s therapy team is dedicated, collaborative, and deeply committed to the individuals they serve. The same high level of care is provided to both long-term residents and short-term rehabilitation patients, with a family-centered approach that supports physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Clear communication, close collaboration with families, and active participation in interdisciplinary care planning ensure responsive, coordinated treatment. Many team members have chosen to build long-term careers at St. Joseph’s, with tenures ranging from five to more than twenty years.

Additional Therapy Enhancements

Therapy staff participate in care plan meetings, conduct family training sessions prior to discharge, support community reintegration through stair training, uneven terrain navigation, and car transfers, emphasize staff longevity, and engage in ongoing education and competency development.
